What is the line? SeaDream Yacht Club
Name of ship? Sea Dream I
Passenger occupancy? 112
Itinerary? Alternates between the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Northern Europe, depending on the season.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for? A second act from Seabourn Cruises founder Atle Brynestad, SeaDream has been sailing since 2001 and has attracted a loyal following among cruisers who prefer yachting to cruising. With just two small ships and a crew providing charming, informal, yet ever-present service on sailings to tiny ports the bigger ships can’t access, a cruise with SeaDream feels, well, dreamy.

Tell us about the ship in general. Built in 1984 and having previously served with Cunard and Seabourn, the ship was extensively refurbished in 2024. The result is a ship that feels both modern and vintage at the same time. It’s rather how one would expect a veteran yacht to feel—familiar and cozy to repeat guests, but not dated or worn in the eyes of a first-timer. There is one liability, however, to an older ship: none of the rooms or suites have balconies. For guests just itching to be outdoors, however, there’s a fun perk—you can sleep under the stars in one of the Balinese daybeds on the top decks, completely made over into a bedroom complete with sheets and pillows and sleepytime amenities by the crew—just book as soon as possible once onboard for this popular feature.

Who is onboard? A good mix of Europeans and Americans, many retired or about to be, but also a sprinkling of mid-career Millennials who are simply fans of the experience SeaDream provides. There’s no restriction on children, but the onboard experience is very much geared toward adults, so we didn’t notice any on our sailing.

Describe the cabins. Standard staterooms are petite, but technically all are suites, with separate bedroom and living room areas. Ensuite baths are similarly petite, but much of the room is given over to the generously sized shower stocked with Elm Organics bath amenities. There’s a good amount of storage space in both drawers and closets, and the free minibar is replenished daily. For those who want more space, there’s also a handful of suites with lavish amounts of space—the Owner’s Suite has a dining area and a soaker tub with an ocean view.

Tell us about the crew. The Yacht Director, Activities Director, and Concierge are the leaders of guest service onboard, floating about making sure guest needs are taken care of, supported by a staff of service crew that learn names and favorite orders with alacrity. The atmosphere onboard is intimate, so the crew are experts at getting to know everybody pretty quickly. Service is also quite flexible to meet guest preferences. There’s a salad bar at lunch, but servers are eager to offer to fix salads themselves for guests who prefer to skip the buffet.

What food and drink options are available on board?  There’s a main dining room, which we noticed in the Caribbean was only used in inclement weather or when the ship’s progress would have made dining outdoors uncomfortable—otherwise meals are served in the shaded Topside Restaurant (there are a couple tables in the full sun for those who prefer it). Breakfasts (after early risers’ coffee and pastries at the Top of the Yacht Bar) are the typical spread (with a full bar) and a daily egg special, although they’ll happily fulfill any request as long as they have the ingredients. Lunches are a mix of buffet-style with a salad and pasta bar, plus sandwiches and hot entrees on offer. Dinners are three-course affairs with sophisticated cuisine but casual atmosphere (although if dining indoors, long pants are requested in the dining room). There’s also room service on offer throughout the day and night, and several culinary presentations, like a spread of deluxe canapés including caviar one evening, and a lavish dessert buffet the next. Have a favorite bar brand or soft drink? Let them know before the sailing, and they’ll make sure they have it stocked.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting? The spa is noted for having the only Thai-certified massage technicians at sea, who excel in performing the dry-style Thai massage. They’ll also happily provide more traditional massage styles and beauty treatments with Sisley Paris products. For an extra treat, you can take your massage in a private area on one of the upper decks. The spa also has a full-service salon for hair and nail treatments, a surprisingly spacious fitness center, and a small sauna and steam room.

What about activities and entertainment? In the evenings after dinner, most guests gravitated back to the Top of the Yacht bar to revel into the wee hours, or to the intimate Piano Bar on Deck 4, with the single-table casino, offering blackjack and poker. There’s also a large library, well-stocked with books left by previous guests. On at least one evening, there’s a movie shown out on the pool deck, complete with bar service and freshly popped popcorn. During the day, there’s a golf simulator on the top deck, or guests can head to the pool deck for early morning instructor-led yoga, a dip in the pool during the day, or a ride down the inflatable waterslide. There’s also a marina launch at the back of the ship offering wave runners, kayaks, personal sailboats, SUPs, snorkel gear, wakeboards, and a floating island for the swimmers.

How was the experience for families? SeaDream curates the experience for adults. Children aren’t unwelcome, but they must stay under the supervision of their parents, and there are no specific children’s activities outlined. It’s likely best for teens and older children comfortable and self-sufficient in an adult-focused environment.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out? Our sailing in the Caribbean was a delight—secluded ports not commonly visited by bigger ships, including Saba, St-Barthélemy, Îles des Saintes, and Bequia, to name a few. Many guests onboard have the means to make their own arrangements on each island, which the concierge helps them organize, so shore excursions aren’t a particular focus for the experience, but the handful they put together were lovely. On Nevis, we visited a botanical garden and bottled our own rum, while snorkeling in the sun-dappled aquamarine waters off Bequia was also memorable. On tiny Saba, not many guests had booked organized tours, but the town is up a steep hill in the center of the island, so the onboard concierge organized a scheduled shuttle service for a nominal fee. For guests not booking shore excursions, the Cruise Director and/or Activities Director will often announce a complimentary organized walk or hike ashore. There are also bikes available to borrow for solo exploring or joining an organized bike excursion. One nit is that the excursions often have high minimum numbers required to operate, so when the ship isn’t full, or excursions aren’t popular, they tend to cancel last-minute—it happened twice on our lightly booked Caribbean sailing, but the Concierge was ready with alternatives when having to break the news.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise? With Norwegian owners, SeaDream takes sustainability seriously. They’re in the process of building a hybrid megayacht, but for now, their focus is on using lighter, less-polluting fuels in their existing ships, connecting to shore power where available, eliminating single-use plastics, and offering a significant plant-based menu to reduce carbon footprint. Where possible, chefs also procure produce from local markets instead of relying on imported foods. In staterooms, the Elm Organics bath amenities are both organic and biodegradable.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking. This feels like the perfect marriage between yachting and cruising. The ships are big enough to offer cruise-like amenities in miniature, but small enough for luxurious, highly personalized service with a familial feel.
